By definition "The Internet is a network of computers which
are
linked all over the world- the International Computer Network. This allows
millionns of users to communicate with each other and access a vast source
of shared information" (Source: ww.which.net).
It is also referred to as "the utlimate network" (Cox,
G), comprising millions of interconnected computers world-wide (thus
the
term "inter...net"). Essentially, it is an information sharing
system, "enabling users to access data stored on varoius computers
located anywhere thousands of miles away- on land, at sea and in the
air (interesting eh?).
However, the working of the Internet is a complex matter, which is
beyond the scope of this awareness discussion. If you need to know
more, please
contact us or go to data communications webpage.
Origin of Internet technology
According to Cox, G (Softenica Ltd), "In the mid-1960s the U.S.
Department of Defense (DoD) sponsored the design and implementation of
a research network, called ARPANET which connected universities and government
establishments. Eventually, in the mid-1980s, it led to the development
of what we now know as the Internet which comprises thousands of interconnected
networks and millions of machines (called hosts).......".
The World Wide Web (www.)- the Internet (websites)
This is the most popular way of accessing information through the
Internet, which contains many websites (webpages) interconnected by
hyperlinks.
Clicking a link takes you to another website, webpage or web resource
in general.
The "world wide web", is often referred to as the "world's
ultimate electronic library" with " contributions from millions
of people (websites) interconnected by links.
For example, click
this external link www.slcb.biz to
access the Sierra Leone Commercial
Bank's website ("biz" stands for
business). They provide Internet banking as well.
Click www.google.com to
go to the world's most visited search engine website (for Internet
research).
You are currently on our website "www.eases.co.uk". This means,
you are accessing information from our organisation called "eases" and
it is a "company in uk" (.co.uk) through the Internet (www).
Thus, the website address (or domain name) is "www.eases.co.uk".
The general format to download or access a website on the Internet
is http://www."name-of-organisation"."x" , "x" can
be:
".co.uk",".com" (i.e. commercial company), ".org" (non-profit
organisation like charities), ".ac" (academic institution), ".net" (networking
company) etc. "x" simply describes the website (i.e. the
type of organiastion).
Thus, to download (access or visit) our website on
the Internet, you need to type in "http://www.eases.co.uk". "http://" stands
for "hyper text transfer protocol", a data-communication term
for downloading files(information).
The opposite term is" ftp>" (file
transfer protocol) for uploading (sending) files (data or information).
If you desire to know more about this subject, please do not hesitate
to contact us. Formal training on Internet technology is available as
well.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
This is a company or organisation that allows you access to the Internet,
usually by selling its services to you (the user). For example Yahoo,
Hotmail, MSN (Microsoft Network) etc, providing users with Internet access
(free or for fee), through e-mail (electronic mail) addresses, usernames
and passwords.
Web/ Internet Browser
Computer program (software) that "understands and reads" the
languange of the "World Wide Web" (HTML, see below). To use
(browse) the Internet, you need to install a web browser (e.g. Microsoft
Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, etc).
The web browser settings
on your computer determine the way text, images, colours etc are
displayed on the computer screen. The details of this subject are also
beyond
the scope of this exercise, which is to provide basic but professional
information,
about the Internet, to those who need it.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Languange)
This is the language of the Internet. It is what the web browser
interpretes and displays on your computer screen in the form of ordinary
readable
human language- e.g. English, Arabic or Chinese text., when you access
the Internet.
HTML is a computer programming language that determines the formatting
information (e.g. paragraph styles, image layout and size, colour and
size of text, web page layout and background colour, creating hyperlinks,
etc.).
It is a computer program; and one needs to learn it, in order to
understand it and possibly become a programmer (like I did, to become
a web designer).
There are various courses available for this, but you do not need to
learn HTML to use the Internet. For more details, hit about proprietor.
