The English dictionary defines "technology" as "the
science of the industrial art. It further defines "technique" as
the "manner of artistic execution; manipulative skill."
-
Technology
can be useful or harmful to mankind, depending on how it is used. Microwave
is one benefit of technological advancement.
-
Use
technology for your own benefit and comfort, do not allow it to "mis-use
you".
-
Do not challenge technology. It is always changing at faster
rates,
with respect to rises in consumer incomes. "What
is new this year, becomes old the following year". Newer
products are being manufactured now and then, in line with
technological advancement. Unfortuantely, consumer
income remains apparently the same.
-
Always mind your budget and your
needs. This is where the principle of Economics comes in; and
it differentiates your needs from
your wants or desires.
When we are faced with the problem of
scarcity of resources (e.g. money) compared to our unlimited wants,
Economics tells us to satisfy our needs instead of our wants.
-
Technology and Economics.
Whereas technolology appeals to consumers to spend their money on things
they want, economics tries to convince them to think rationally
in terms of need, usefulness and affordability.
For
instance, there is no rationale in buying a new computer or car, if
you already have
another one that "serves you well". This is economic thinking.
However, some consumers believe in having "top of the range" products.
This is technology-driven.
Sadly, some of these products are acquired on credit basis at times;
with interest payable being additional cost.
-
It is therefore prudent to resist what you do not
actually need.
Do not allow technology to dictate your consumption pattern.
On the whole, technology
can be a menace or a blessing to mankind. It depends on how
we use it. The author below explains this in detail.
